Which EV Charging Adapters Should Your Workshop Stock?

Charging adapter confusion is costing workshops time and losing them customers. A customer arrives with a new Ioniq 6 (NACS in the US, Type 2 in Europe) and a portable charger with the wrong connector โ€” you need to either have the right adapter in stock or send them away.

Here's a no-fluff list of what to stock and why.

The 6 Essential Adapters

1. Type 2 โ†’ Type 1 (J1772)

Use case: European-spec portable chargers used with US-spec vehicles (common with import vehicles). Also covers any scenario where a customer has a Type 2 EVSE and a Type 1 vehicle.
Stock quantity: 2โ€“3 units. Moderate demand but essential when needed.

2. Type 1 (J1772) โ†’ Type 2

Use case: US-spec EVSEs (very common in workshop environments where mixed vehicles are serviced) connected to EU-spec vehicles.
Stock quantity: 2 units.

3. CCS1 โ†’ NACS (with PLC bridge)

Use case: Legacy CCS1 vehicles (pre-2025 Ford, GM, BMW US-spec) charging at NACS-only stations. This adapter requires active PLC bridging to handle the ISO 15118 handshake โ€” passive mechanical adapters will not work for DC fast charging.
Stock quantity: 1โ€“2 units. High value item; customer often needs help sourcing it.

4. GB/T โ†’ Type 2 (AC)

Use case: Chinese-market EVs (BYD, NIO, SAIC) imported or grey-market in non-Chinese markets. GB/T AC socket on the vehicle needs to charge from a Type 2 EVSE.
Stock quantity: 2โ€“3 units if you're in a market with significant Chinese EV presence (Southeast Asia, Middle East, Australia).

5. CHAdeMO โ†’ CCS (passive adapter)

Use case: Legacy Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with CHAdeMO inlets at CCS-only DC fast chargers. Note: this adapter only works at CCS chargers that support CHAdeMO protocol โ€” not all do.
Stock quantity: 1 unit. Declining demand but still useful for older fleet vehicles.

6. Type 2 โ†’ Schuko / Type G / Type I (3-pin)

Use case: Emergency slow charging from a standard household outlet. These are not fast adapters โ€” they limit to 10A/2.3kW โ€” but they're invaluable when a customer's portable EVSE is lost or broken and they just need to get home.
Stock quantity: 1 unit per outlet type common in your market.

What Not to Stock

Avoid stocking DC fast-charge adapters without the active PLC bridging electronics โ€” they will not work for DC charging regardless of physical fit and will frustrate customers. Also avoid no-name adapters with unknown temperature ratings; at 32A, connector quality matters for safety.
